How to prepare for a yoga retreat (especially if it's your first)

Taking part in a yoga retreat is one of the most regenerating experiences you can give yourself. But if it's your first time, it's normal to have a few doubts: what do I bring? do I need experience? what will the day be like? This guide gathers the advice I most often give to those about to leave.

What to pack

The golden rule is: light but practical. Most retreats provide a mat and props, so you don't need to bring them. Focus on what makes you feel at ease during practice and in your moments of rest.

  • Comfortable clothing for practice (in layers, to adapt to the temperature).
  • A sweater or light jacket for sunrise and sunset practices.
  • A swimsuit, if the venue has a pool or is near the sea.
  • Comfortable shoes for any excursions.
  • A water bottle, sunscreen, a hat.
  • A notebook for journaling: insights often surface during a retreat and are worth noting down.

Do I need experience? And if I'm not flexible?

No, you don't need to be an experienced practitioner. Well-designed retreats offer adaptive practices, with variations for every level. Flexibility isn't a prerequisite: if anything, it's one of the gifts of consistent practice. An open mind and the desire to give yourself this time matter far more.

How to approach your first retreat (even alone)

Many people take part on their own: it's one of the most beautiful ways to experience a retreat, because it lets you truly immerse yourself and meet new people in a welcoming setting. Arrive with few rigid expectations and lots of curiosity. Leave your phone aside as much as you can, respect your own pace, and allow yourself to slow down: that's exactly the point of the journey.

What to expect from a typical day

Retreat days have a gentle rhythm: practice in the morning, breakfast, free time or excursions, a softer practice in the late afternoon, a shared dinner. There's room for movement and for rest, for connection and for silence. It's not a schedule to chase, but a frame that holds you.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Most retreats welcome beginners and offer adaptable practices. Letting the guide know your level helps you make the most of the experience.

Absolutely, it's very common. The group and the intimate atmosphere make it easy to feel part of the experience right away.

It depends: there are intensive weekends and longer retreats of 4–7 days. Five-day formats offer a good balance between a real break and sustainability.

You don't need to be ready to leave. You only need to say yes to the experience: the rest you learn along the way. — Silvia
